Aprender

In the Ghorak Zo city of Mountain's Reach was once a bookstore, and that bookstore was once owned and run by Aprender.

Aprender was the wife of Manejar, a high-level roving overseer for the Ascendancy, whose job was to travel from city to city, checking on the local governors and the Ascendancy political machinery. Aprender herself preferred the world of books. Her bookstore was her hobby, and was considered a great curiosity in the city. Manejar would collect books for Aprender on his tours to restock her shelves.

On one trip, Manejar died of a heart attack in Hyrios, under mysterious circumstances. He was dropped off at a Thoom hospital by a woman who fled immediately after. Now widowed, and without Manejar's salary, Aprender found herself struggling to make ends meet, forced to search out books and customers on her own.

While on a visit to The Capital, Aprender foolishly asked around for books on her interest at the time--alternate historical accounts of the Ascendancy. Shortly after, she found herself turned in to the Ascendancy for questioning official history, confined, and questioned for several hours herself.

Perhaps because of her past relationship with Manejar, she was at least never treated roughly or even spoken to harshly. Following the interrogation though, Aprender was offered a posting to the Lok'Groton islands, where (so she was told not without sarcasm) she would find all the alternate histories she desired and more. The posting was effective immediately and non-negotiable.

In Puddleby, trying to cope with her new and unexpected life, Aprender initially took up the profession of Fighter, the better to survive in the harsh islands. However, she found the profession a poor fit for her, and shortly after passing the second circle Fighter test, reset her path, restarting her new life as an exile once again, this time walking the path of the Mystic.

She often wonders what happened to her bookstore; if it was looted, perhaps even burned, or if someone else took over the abandoned store and if it survives to this day.
